UCAS launched the first MA program in Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics in China. Professor Li Pei, founder of the discipline is known as “mother of applied linguistics in China”.  Being in her nineties, professor Li cares no less than before about the development of the department. In 1978, the class for advanced studies of graduate curricula in TESOL was opened. In 1984, the Ministry of Education authorized the GUCAS-based class for advanced studies of graduate curricula in applied linguistics. It was a class jointly-organized by GUCAS which was previously known as the graduate school of University of Science and Technology of China, Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and Beijing Jiaotong University which was previously known as Northern Jiaotong University. In 1989 GUCAS applied to the Ministry of Education and the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council to allow the department to grant a master’s degree in linguistics and applied linguistics and in 1990, the application was approved. Since 1978, about 100 students have studied in the department. Most of them became teachers who have made outstanding achievements in teaching and research.

UCAS has the largest number of graduate students in China. A wide range of courses in psychology, computation science, cognitive science and education are offered. The above courses and the linguistic program are interdisciplinary, which promotes development in linguistics.
